Saturday 15th September
F.A. Cup 1st Qualifying Round
Hemel Town 4 East Thurrock United 0

On a sultry afternoon, Hemel strolled to a rather easy victory against their Ryman League Premier Division opponents.
With both sides seemingly on a mission to give the other the ball, the first thirty minutes or so turned out to be a classic non-event. The closest Hemel came to scoring came from Drew Roberts’ long range effort that carried no pace on twenty minutes, and East Thurrock created one opening for skipper Lee Burns shortly after, but he failed to make contact with the ball at all from five yards out.
The visitors however did have the majority of what possession there was, and when Hemel’s first goal came on thirty five minutes it was somewhat against the run of play at the time.
Paul Edgeworth raced onto Burgess’ pass into the right hand side of the box and saw his shot blocked by a combination of defender Wes Faulkner and keeper Jamie Riley. The ball however rebounded nicely to Burgess who was following up, and he cracked it home from ten yards out despite a valiant effort on the line by Dean Chandler to stop it.
Four minutes into the second half Burgess then scored his second, prodding home from five yards out at the far post as Riley failed to punch Yiadom Yeboah’s long throw into the area, and from that point on it was all over bar the shouting.
Hemel continued to allow the Rocks more of the ball as they sat back, but despite this Thurrock still failed to make Hemel keeper Ian Brown make a single save worth the name.
Burgess unluckily wasted his chance to record his hat-trick, when on sixty six minutes he shot past the far post with just Riley to beat, and Roberts saw his shot blocked by Faulkner a minute later.
The third goal came with fifteen minutes left, when from an indirect free-kick Roberts lashed Dean Cracknell’s prod of the ball into the top corner of the net from all of twenty five yards - keeper Riley only able to get his fingertips to the ball at full stretch.
As the clock struck ninety minutes Steve Sinclair then scored the fourth after Burgess left him with just Riley to beat, but the winger unfortunately injured himself in the process with what looked like a hamstring pull.
East Thurrock at last managed a shot two minutes into injury time - but substitute Gary Ansell blazed the ball over Brown’s bar from ten yards out, and that just about summed up the day for the visitors.
