HOOLIGANS RUN RIOT IN CITY CENTRE

Thirteen men were arrested after gangs of football fans began brawling in city centre streets.

The violence followed Leicester's 4-0 win against Norwich City at the Walkers Stadium.

Shocked shoppers and traders watched as the violence broke out in the area around Loseby Lane and High Street on Saturday afternoon.

As many as 30 thugs were seen throwing stones at other fans, damaging property and chasing a group of men.

Others are said to have taken furniture from a juice bar to use as weapons, before smashing it up on the street.

One witness, who saw men bleeding from facial cuts, described the scene as "scary" and "like something from a film".

Police believe the trouble began after a group of Norwich fans left the match before it ended and headed for the city centre before 5pm. Officers were called to the scene and chased a number of hooligans along High Street. By about 6pm, they had arrested 13 people for various offences, including violent disorder.

On the FoxesTalk online forum, some fans described the violence as "disgraceful".

One said: "The Leicester 'fans' came down Loseby Lane towards Market Place and they seemed to be overwhelmed by Norwich 'fans' and retreated, bloody noses and all."

Match commander Supt Chris Rollings said: "We believe a number of fans left the football ground early and made their way into the city centre.

I always remember in the late 70's & 80's Leicester's old ground,Filbert Street, being a bit of a dodgey place.Straight out of the ground to be met by the local's,then when you'd got past them you had to negotiate the ambush in the park near the rugby ground that you had to walk through to get to the station
